THE FIRST-EVER MAZDA CX-80

NEW ZEALAND SPECIFICATION ANNOUNCED

Auckland, 12 August 2024.  Mazda Motors of New Zealand is pleased to announce first local information for the first-ever Mazda CX-80, ahead of its launch in November 2024.

The Mazda CX-80 is the third model in New Zealand to launch from Mazda’s Large Architecture platform.  First seen on CX-60 and CX-90, this platform allows for high levels of passenger comfort, engine technology and maintains the signature ‘Jinba Ittai’ driving performance experienced in every Mazda.

The Mazda CX-80 is a three-row SUV with a premium presence, expressing richness and elegance in a durable SUV that reflects its ‘Graceful Toughness’ design concept. The body size was designed out of consideration for easy manoeuvring in daily driving and parking situations.

The design approach, which could be described as architectural, expresses calmness and richness, clearly emphasising the premium quality space of the three-row seating layout whilst maintaining the elegance typical of any Mazda SUV.

There are two dynamic engines in the Mazda CX-80 powertrain line-up: a Plug-in Hybrid featuring a 2.5 litre, four-cylinder e-Skyactiv G petrol unit with electrification technology, and a straight-six 3.3 litre e-Skyactiv G petrol unit incorporating M Hybrid Boost, Mazda’s 48V mild hybrid system.

Mazda’s e-SKYACTIV Plug-in Hybrid powertrain combines a four-cylinder petrol engine with a large, 129 kW electric motor and a 17.8 kWh high-capacity lithium-ion battery.  This combination of petrol engine and electric motor delivers a total system output of 241 kW and abundant torque of 500 Nm.

When running on electric motor power alone, the CX-80 Plug-in Hybrid is set to offer around 60 km of electric motor-powered driving, comfortably allowing many day-to-day journeys to be completed on electric power alone.

Also familiar in Mazda’s Large Architecture platform is the 3.3 litre six-cylinder turbocharged petrol hybrid engine, developed using the ‘right sizing’ concept which calls for optimised displacement to improve both fuel and power efficiency.  With 209 kW and 450 Nm available, the in-line six-cylinder format delivers a strong and engaging engine sound, whilst producing less vibration due to its characteristic ‘perfect balance’ for a smooth and quiet ride.

Featuring M Hybrid Boost – Mazda’s 48V Mild Hybrid System – the petrol engine combines its high output with impressive fuel economy.

Both powerplants are mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission and Mazda’s i-Activ All-Wheel Drive system. Mazda Intelligent Drive Select (Mi-Drive) offers a choice of four drive modes (plus EV mode for the Plug-in Hybrid).

Exceeding expectations is a generous 2,500kg braked tow rating for both Plug-in Hybrid and 3.3 litre six-cylinder petrol hybrid powertrain options.

Grade Structure

The Mazda CX-80 range consists of two model grades, offering an appealing package to both CX-80 drivers and passengers alike.

Synonymous within the Mazda range, the SP preface stands for sports inspired, sophistication and performance.  Recently reintroduced, the SP nameplate represents a sports-inspired design theme, enhanced equipment levels and a focus of uplifting the driving experience.

Highlights of the CX-80 SP include leather seat trim (electrically adjustable and with front seat heating), black metallic 20-inch alloy wheels, and LED headlights.  Gloss black exterior mirrors combined with black chrome signature wing and honeycomb front grille.  Power operated tailgate, 360 View Monitor and the innovative Personalisation System are also standard equipment.

CX-80 SP is available with both Plug-in Hybrid and 3.3 litre six-cylinder petrol hybrid powertrains.

Ascending the range, CX-80 Homura builds on the equipment level of SP by offering a more luxurious package.  Exterior design is visually differentiated by a vast panoramic glass sunroof and Adaptive LED headlights.

The interior theme is consistent with SP, with a step-up in terms of the standard equipment.  Luxury touches are in abundance: electric adjustment for the heated steering wheel, heated rear seats are added, and the Driver Personalisation System is upgraded to include facial recognition technology and ideal driving position recommendations.  The 360 View Monitor features Mazda’s innovative See-Through View functionality and a Bose audio system offers superior sound quality in all seating positions.

CX-80 Homura is available exclusively with the Plug-in Hybrid powertrain.

A single interior trim option is available for the Mazda CX-80. Black Leather, standard for both SP and Homura grades, features titanium-coloured stitching and is paired to leather-like trim and mesh metal film inserts on instrument panel, centre console and doors.

The CX-80’s second row bench has both a sliding range of 120 mm and a fully variable seat recline range of between 15-33 degrees.  The third-row seating has been designed to accommodate occupants up to 1,700 mm in height.

Access to the third-row seating is made comfortable by a large door opening height, a second row one-touch walk-in function, a wide, flat step floor and a large hand grip built into the side trim recess.

The Mazda CX-80 will be on-sale locally in November 2024, with full pricing details to be announced in the coming weeks.
