Andrew McMillan

Andrew McMillan received a grant of $4,500 for a mobility dog that will assist him with everyday tasks. The dog will provide Andrew with new-found independence and an increased level of well-being. As well as making his daily tasks easier, he will also gain a lifelong companion.

Auckland Hospital Foundation

Auckland Hospital Foundation helps the regions hospitals provide the best possible health outcomes. The foundation received a grant of $5,000 to assist with its Rise Scholarship programme which supports nursing and midwifery students to be successful and complete their qualifications without financial or emotional pressures.

Blue Light Ventures Incorporated

Blue Light Ventures runs leadership programmes for over 100 youth each year at Whenuapai Air Base. It received $2,812 to purchase caps and t-shirt for all the attendees at next year’s programme. The students are nominated by their school or community for demonstrating leadership potential but don’t have the opportunity to further this skill.

Charmaine Brinsdon

Charmaine Brinsdon received a grant of $4,959 to fund the cost of purchasing a custom recumbent trike for her 9-year-old daughter, Prayer. Prayer loves to play with her active older sisters, but her physical and mental disabilities have made this difficult. The new trike will give her more freedom to enjoy everyday life.

Christchurch School of Music Incorporated

The Christchurch School of Music Incorporated offer music classes for everyone from pre-schoolers through to grandparents. CSM received a grant of $1,920.41 to cover the additional cost of two beginner bassoons, called Tenoroons. These instruments will be used by new musicians wanting to learn but are not in a position to afford one.

Environment Network Manawatū

Environment Network Manawatū received a grant of $5,158 to fund the cost of 60 NAWAC traps for feral cats and possums. The traps will mitigate predator pests and support its Southern Ruahine Kiwi Habitat Restoration Project (Ruahine Kiwi) which aims to reintroduce Kiwi by 2026.

He Waka Eke Noa Charitable Trust

He Waka Eke Noa Charitable Trust grows and develops the arts in Aotearoa by providing mentorship, opportunities, and facilities to Kiwis. The trust received a grant of $2,850 for the installation of a 3-phase power outlet at their performance venue – The Factory Theatre. The theatre will be able to support artists from all areas of the country and support a wide range of practitioners to tell their stories.

Matatatoki School

Matatatoki School has designed a new garden area on its school grounds as an outdoor classroom space for students to enjoy. The school received $3,773.95 to go towards creating a new vegetable garden, a chill out spot and a boardwalk to create the new area.

The New Zealand Conservation Trust received a grant of $3,911.30 to purchase a Brinsea Ova-Easy190 incubator which holds 12 eggs in one unit. The trust protects kiwis through conservation, education, and collaboration. The new incubator creates a great opportunity for the trust to significantly increase the number of eggs that it currently incubates.

Ohakune Carrot Adventure Park

Ohakune Carrot Adventure Park provides tourists and locals with a warm, friendly environment with a focus on physical exercise and providing healthy eating options. It received a grant of $1,280.00 to excavate and clear the waste and toxic plants from the riverbank to allow native plants to be planted ahead of the area’s unveiling in February.

Project Employ Limited

Project Employ Limited creates programmes to support young people with intellectual and learning disabilities in the Auckland area. The Project received $5,518 for two new blenders at its Flourish Café which offers work experience and training to many young people. The café currently has one location but is looking to expand to continue connecting people with disabilities to businesses and the public.

Rebecca Poad

Rebecca Poad received $4,439 for her twin sons who both suffer from Nablus Mask, a very rare condition which has caused the boys to have hearing, vison, and speech problems. The grant will be used for tie-down restraints on the boys’ new powerchairs that allow them to take part in normal activities around the house.

Richmond Community Garden Trust

Richmond Community Garden Trust received $3,000 towards materials to build a log cabin at its Fungi Farm Site. The farm is a fun education space where families learn about the commonly misunderstood fungi kingdom. Part of the new cabin will include an old post that was used in Christchurch’s redzone, a theme the farm started with its heritage trail.

Royal New Zealand Plunket Trust – Canterbury Region

Royal New Zealand Plunket Trust received a grant of $3,184 to purchase new car restraints which keep babies safe while travelling. The new car restraints will be for the growing number of families who do not have the available resources to afford their own.

Sailability Wellington Trust Incorporated

Sailability Wellington Trust Incorporated received a grant of $2,425.35 to purchase VHF radios for their sailing hubs. The Trust provides sailing opportunities for people in the Wellington region with any form of disability, with the new radios enabling it to maintain high standards of safety and coaching on the water for the courses it runs year-round.

Southbridge Playcentre Incorporated

Southbridge Playcentre Incorporated believe that young children learn best through play when the children lead the lessons. Southbridge Playcentre received a grant of $947.01 to purchase an ‘Outdoor Mud Station’ where children can play by pretending to cook with mud, sand, and water. Activities such as this are how children start to develop fine motor skills and social skills.

Suryashobha Herle

Suryashobha Herle received a grant of $6,456.10 for her son Atul who suffers from Cerebral Palsy. The money will go towards an ultralight manual wheelchair to replace his current power wheelchair which he uses for school. The new wheelchair will allow him to be more active and independent in the community and enable him to participate fully in the many outdoor activities he enjoys.

Totara Park Playcentre

Totara Park Playcentre is a parent-led early childhood education centre that believe in families learning and growing together. To maintain a safe environment, it received a grant of $625.95 for five first aid refresher courses and one grab and go bag in case of an emergency.

Turitea Marae

Turitea Marae received a grant of $2,556.57 to survey their land as part of its Marae Development Plan. This project gives the community the foundation to move forward with redevelopment plans focused on realising their ancestor’s vision. The grant also included funds for an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) kit for the community with lifesaving equipment needed in emergencies.

Upper Hutt Community Youth Trust

Upper Hutt Community Youth Trust received $1,450 to purchase a grinder for its barista training school. The school has more than 80 rangatahi in its programme next year, which features NCEA credits and an industry standard certificate. It is just one of the Trust’s projects designed to create a better future for the young people of Upper Hutt.

Waikato Community Hospice Trust supports patients and their whānau to make the most out of every moment they have left. The hospice received a grant of $2,677 to purchase two handheld Pulse Oximeters which significantly reduces discomfort for patients.

Waipukurau Little Theatre Incorporated

Waipukurau Little Theatre received $4,200 for new LED stage lights and a smoke generator. The new equipment will be used for shows the non-profit organisation produces. Each year it creates two or three shows to provide youth with the opportunity to experience and participate in the performing arts.

Wanganui Surflifeguard Service Inc.

Wanganui Surf Lifeguard Service (WSLS) has been safeguarding Whanganui’s beaches for more than 100 years and is one of the oldest clubs in New Zealand. WSLS received a grant of $4,200 to purchase specialist body boards for its junior members to kickstart their education around water safety and surf lifesaving.

Wildlife.ai Trust

Wilflife.ai Trust received $4,200 to develop and teach educational courses for year 6-8 students. The courses are designed with a “learn by doing” hands on approach for biology, maths, and digital technologies. They include quizzes, educational videos and learning activities where students engage with scientific research and create learning models that process environmental data.

BirdCare Aotearoa

BirdCare Aotearoa provides professional care and rehabilitation for sick, injured, and orphaned wild birds. The trust received a grant of $2,816 to purchase two infusion pumps and two cold laser therapy units, critical lifesaving veterinary equipment. This equipment will help BirdCare Aotearoa to continue its work caring for and protecting New Zealand birds.

Charlotte received a grant of $3,189 to purchase a trike for her impaired child, Oscar. This trike will not only allow Oscar to improve his fitness through outdoor biking activities, but it will allow Oscar to achieve more independence and enable him to participate in outdoor activities with his family.

Cheviot Area School Home and School Association

Cheviot Home and School Association provide the link between staff, students and parents. Its main role is fundraising to help provide extra funds for their school to purchase equipment and resources that is not within the school’s budget. The Association was granted $2,100 to purchase an incubator to enable Junior and NCEA level students to study microorganisms.

Creative Kids Trust uses creative arts to provide pathways for young people and their wider whanau and community. Through engaging creatively in art, theatre, music and movement, the activities help individuals explore things that are often difficult to articulate in words. The trust received a grant of $4,700 to assist in purchasing musical materials and resources for its programmes.

The Graeme Dingle Foundation Wellington is a proud grassroots community focused Trust. It works to transform young lives through its free in-school child and youth development programs. The Foundation was granted $613.04 to assist with training frontline staff in first aid to enable them to deliver their programs in a safe manner.

Josie Ward

Josie Ward received a grant of $3,960 to purchase a Dexcom G6 Constant Glucose Sensor, Transmitter, and Pump for her son Vinnie. Eleven year old Vinnie is on the Autism Spectrum and has severe Type 1 Diabetes. The specialist equipment will help Vinnie to ensure better glucose management, improving his physical health and overall quality of life.

Katikati Community Toy Library Incorporated

Katikati Community Toy Library Incorporated offers more than 600 toys that are guaranteed to delight and entertain young children of all ages. The family-focused community organisation believes early play forms a key part of children’s educational journey by teaching them a range of cognitive and physical development skills. Katikati Community Toy Library received a grant of $1,130.71 to assist in purchasing new outdoor tractors to replace their 15 year old ones.

Lower Hutt Playcentre is a not-for-profit Early Childhood Education Service (ECE) run by voluntary parents that provide high quality education for children in mixed-age groups. Lower Hutt Playcentre received a grant of $806.83 to assist in purchasing some new, safer bicycles and scooters for their centre.

Manawahe Eco Trust

The Manawahe Eco Trust (MET) was created to manage and enhance the native biodiversity of the Manawahe Ecological Corridor, which is the only forested ecological corridor that exists between the Rotorua lakes and the sea. MET’s focus is on protecting the native biodiversity of the Manawahe Ecological Corridor through predator control and education. The Trust received a grant of $2,650 to assist in purchasing trap monitors, which are a huge asset for the overall predator control work undertaken by MET.

Ngakuru Playcentre is a community ECE facility. They are the only ECE facility within their community, and they believe in giving all children the ability to learn in all areas of life. The Playcentre received a grant of $1,960 to assist in purchasing two sets of BeeBots to help children learn about progamming and coding.

North Rodney Blue Light Ventures Incorporated provides a wide range of outdoor, recreational, sporting, and life skills education to young people in the Wellsford-Warkworth area. The trust aims to reduce youth crime, build community partnerships, and increase young people’s self-esteem. North Rodney Blue Light Ventures received a grant of $1,906 to upgrade fishing equipment used for community activities and local school camps.

Pandemonium is a registered charitable trust focused on educating and encouraging school children’s passion for music. The trust assists promising young percussionists to pursue performance opportunities and provides access to quality instruments. The Trust was granted $2,007.42 to assist in purchasing a second-hand marimba which will be used for student practices and performances.

The Papakura Community Trust (PCT) was established in 2004 in response to the growing socio-economic need of families and individuals in the local Red Hill area of Papakura. The PCT believe in strengthening family and community relationships. They received a grant of $720 to assist in funding a parenting seminar on healthy boundaries and loving discipline, primarily for families and parents from the Little Sunbeams early childhood centre.

Raewyn’s daughter, Chloe, was born with a rare genetic variation which has caused a lifetime of seizures and intellectual disability. Raewyn received a grant of $3,370 to assist in purchasing a second skin suit for Chloe to wear daily which will help aid her gross motor skills and keep her scoliosis at bay.

Soundraise is a charity organisation that works primarily in Auckland with low-decile schools to provide free musical equipment and instruments to schools that have limited budget for their music programmes. The Charity received a grant of $4,095 to assist in purchasing various musical instruments for its school programmes.

Taupo Community Gardens Trust

Taupo Community Gardens (TCG) provides a place for people from a range of different backgrounds to meet and work together. Their services include annual composting workshops, assisting locals in their efforts to divert food waste from landfill, and offering gardening sessions for local ECE centres. The trust received a grant of $3,288 to purchase a woodchipper/mulcher and a tiller for use at the Taupo Community Gardens.

The Scout Association of New Zealand is dedicated to empowering young people through adventurous experiences. The association has grown exponentially over the last year and as a result requires additional qualified first aid leaders and kits to support its new scouts. The association received a grant of $2,226 to fund first aid courses for ten of its leaders and to purchase two new kits.

Tōtara Hospice provides specialist palliative care to the community of South and South East Auckland. They support the terminally ill and their whānau to live well and die with dignity. Totara Hospice received a grant of $952.94 to assist in purchasing a wireless CareMat which will help reduce the risk of falls and dangers for their patients.

WRDA aims to provide health benefits that assist in improving the everyday lives of people with disabilities in the community through proven therapeutic horse-riding programmes. The association received a grant of $5,000 to assist with costs associated in purchasing a horse that will work well in a therapy programme.

Whenua Iti Trust Incorporated delivers a range of outdoor programmes, using practical learning to inspire positive change. The trust was granted $1,583.20 to assist in purchasing equipment and resources to extend its range of experiential science-based activities across several programmes for both primary and secondary students.

Whirinaki Whare Taonga is a vibrant arts centre in Upper Hutt featuring art, culture and history. Whirinaki Whare Taonga received a grant of $5,000 to support its family focused exhibition, Curious Contraptions. The exhibition is aimed at encouraging interest among young Kiwis about science, technology and engineering.

Youth Search and Rescue Trust is a non-profit organisation who train and mentor young people in Emergency Management and Search and Rescue to ensure there is a future generation of experienced and expert volunteers. The trust received a grant of $6,382.40 to purchase two basket stretchers which are essential for carrying out rescue training.

MEIT is a registered charitable trust set up by the landowners, local iwi, and residents to help manage the ecological restoration of Maungatautari. Their mission is to protect and enhance the Mauri of Maungatautari. The trust received a grant of $5,000 to purchase trail cameras which will help save staff and contractors valuable time as they will no longer have to physically check water gates daily.

West Auckland Community Toy Library provides families with access to affordable and high-quality educational toys and equipment. The library received a grant of $450 to purchase three new balance bikes, expanding and upgrading its current range. Balance bikes promote balance, motor coordination, and physical strength and confidence for young tamariki.

Camellia House Trust

Camellia House is a safe haven for women and their children in the Manawatu, offering temporary accommodation and support services to help gain back their independence. The trust received a grant of $1,191 to purchase outdoor equipment to create a play area for children to play, learn and have fun. The play area will create an environment for the children to learn through play by encouraging exploration, creativity and problem-solving, as well as enhancing their listening skills and ability to interact socially.

East End Surf Life Saving Club Incorporated

East End Surf Life Saving Club provides a community service to the people of New Plymouth by voluntarily providing lifeguards at East End Beach. The club received a grant of $3,500 to purchase specialist bodyboards for use by junior members (aged from 6 to 14) to kickstart their education around water safety and surf lifesaving. The bodyboards are specially designed to be safe to learn on (made from foam with handles) and provide junior members with skills that help them to stay safe near the ocean.

Everybody’s Theatre Society Incorporated is a Taranaki trust run by volunteers in the Opunake community. The trust works to highlight the unique bond between the theatre building and the community and has made the theatre a multi-functional facility that the wider community can benefit from. The trust received a grant of $1,600 to train volunteers to install the sound system used by live performers.

The Feilding and District Art Society Incorporated supports artists and artisans in the local community by hosting exhibitions, workshops and events including the Manawatu Art Expo. The society’s aim is to provide everyone in the region with the opportunity to see, make, or exhibit artwork with no barriers for participation. The society received a grant of $2,000 to fund the Youth Art Award prize at the 2022 Art Awards. The Youth Award category is for under 21’s and provides young artists with the opportunity to invest in their craft and exhibit their work for the first time.

Hamilton Arts Trust’s vision is – art everywhere every day, with the mission to bring the streets of Hamilton alive with art. Boon After Dark is the trust’s annual installation of temporary illuminated sculptures, which in 2022 will coincide with the first public celebration of Matariki. The trust received a grant of $3,800 to fund a Phonic Light Bridge and UV Spaghetti art works with the aim of providing free, high-quality, family friendly installations that enliven Hamilton city.

Kidz Need Dadz Charitable Trust aims to strengthen father-child relationships through support, education, and fun. The charity received a grant of $3,600 to support staff training and education to help improve the organisation’s sustainability and support it can provide to families, dads, and children in local communities.

Lisa Hooper

Lisa Hooper received a grant of $5,825 to cover the additional cost of her son William’s therapy dog. Lisa hopes to help her son lead a fulfilled and happy life and gain as much independence as possible. Often William’s anxiety limits how much they can do as a family, even though he would dearly love to do more with younger brother Lincoln. By having a Therapy Dog to work with, Lisa believes William will gain confidence and give him support to experience new things.

Manta Watch New Zealand Charitable Trust

Manta Watch New Zealand Charitable Trust’s mission is to increase the knowledge of and advocacy for Aotearoa New Zealand’s oceanic ecosystems through conducting scientific research on the globally endangered oceanic manta ray and spine-tailed devil ray. The trust received a grant of $2,516 to purchase an underwater scooter for the research team to record and collect in-water biological data of these species.

Maungaraki School

Maungaraki School’s aim is to educate the next generation, by teaching not only numeracy and literacy, but also other areas such as the environment and history. The school is situated on a hill looking over the Hutt Valley and is surrounded by native bush. The staff and students are passionate about the environment and the community is proactive in making the area predator free. The school received a grant of $814 to purchase six A24 Rat Stoat Trap Kits, to assist with the trapping of stoats. The traps are easy, safe and maintenance free for students to use and will assist in keeping the area predator free.

Moehau Environment Group Incorporated

Moehau Environment Group Incorporated’s mission is to restore and protect the biodiversity and habitats of North Coromandel. The organisation implement large-scale conservation projects in partnership with local iwi, landowners, and regional and national bodies, while supporting the conservation initiatives of others across the region. The field team are focused on keeping priority pests under control; however, the emergence of ferrets is a new threat to the wildlife in the area. The organisation received a grant of $4,992 to purchase trapping equipment for the team and volunteers to set up a trapping operation to target the ferrets.

Museum of Transport and Technology

MOTAT’s vision is to use the past, present and future technology, and ingenuity of Aotearoa to educate and inspire the innovators of tomorrow. The Education team’s goal is to provide quality educational programmes that promote innovation and meet the needs of our tamariki. The organisation received a grant of $10,300 to restore Six Simple Machines, an interactive exhibit that helps explain the fundamentals of engineering and how machines work for visiting school groups. Students receive fun and experiential learning with the Simple Machines exhibit which takes the lever, wheel, pulley, inclined plane, wedge, and screw, and shows how these combine to make more complex machines.

Panacea Arts Charitable Trust

The Panacea Arts Charitable Trust believe in changing lives through creativity and providing access to the arts for all people. Artists are encouraged to explore their own creativity and to express themselves through their work. The trust received a grant of $2,334 to purchase materials for a celebratory exhibition of works by new artists of ‘South Auckland’ – Ōtāhuhu, Māngere, and Otara.

Paul Walsh

Paul Walsh received a grant of $5,000 towards a recumbent trike to provide mobility and freedom for his son Max. The trike will provide Max with independence and the ability to be a valued and contributing member of his community. With the funds Paul can start the process of customising the trike to Max’s needs.

Paula Hemara

Paula Hemara received a grant of $3,960 to purchase diabetic sensors to monitor his blood glucose levels. At the age of four, Kobe was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes, which brought on many challenges for him, including the fear of finger pricking. Kobe has come a long way since his diagnosis due to his parents’ determination to find ways to reduce his pain and support him on his journey. The sensors are inserted into Kobe’s arms every 10 days and set up on an app that shows continuous monitoring of his blood glucose levels, eliminating the need for finger pricks. The sensors alert when the blood glucose level is low or high, both of which can be life-threatening to Kobe. The sensors will provide better awareness to help manage Kobe’s diabetes more closely, allowing him to participate in more activities and be independent while at school.

Project Jonah New Zealand Incorporated

Project Jonah’s vision is to create a world where marine mammals are respected, protected, and saved from unnecessary harm. The charity’s goal is to inspire and empower New Zealanders to take action, by giving them the practical skills to protect these animals and the oceans they call home. The charity received a grant of $1,476 to fund First Aid skills training for staff, equipping them with the necessary skills should they be required in the field.

Richmond Group Riding for the Disabled Incorporated

Richmond Group Riding for the Disabled Incorporated provide specialised therapeutic horse riding through a range of tailored programmes for people living with physical, intellectual, emotional, and social challenges. The organisation received a grant of $1,274 to purchase a wide saddle to support unbalanced riders and to reduce stress levels of the horse.

Roger Williams

Roger Williams received a grant of $3,726 to build a retaining wall for an in-ground trampoline for his 14-year-old son Zac who has autism. Zac is non-verbal and displays sensory-seeking behaviours to communicate his needs and frustrations through physical outlets such as jumping and swinging. Roger sourced a trampoline for Zac to support this soothing behaviour, but he is afraid of heights, so Roger created an in-ground trampoline set up. It has helped with his emotional regulation, and doubles as a means of exercise. This has worked well over summer, but Roger is concerned that the winter rain will cause the walls of the pit to cave in. Roger will use the grant funds to construct a retaining wall to support the walls of the pit, ensuring the trampoline remains safe and accessible to Zac.

Te Whakaora Tangata

Te Whakaora Tangata aims to serve the highest-risk families in South Auckland, addressing deep-rooted issues of trauma that cause intergenerational family dysfunction – depression, drug/alcohol abuse, domestic violence, sexual abuse, and family breakdown. It has developed programmes that successfully engage ‘hard-to-reach’ parents and significantly increase child protective factors in the home. The organisation received a grant of $3,634 to purchase a heat pump, furniture and rug for its new counselling cabin being built on the property.

Turua School

Turua School’s Garden to Table programme provides skills-based food education, giving children the knowledge and motivation to make healthy eating choices and the skills to grow and maintain their own vegetable garden. The school received a grant of $900 to purchase a three-bay compost system and kitset to practice sustainable skills of compost-making and recycling within the garden and outdoor classroom environment.

Waikanae Estuary Care Group Incorporated

Waikanae Estuary Care Group’s goal is to restore the Waikanae Estuary Scientific Reserve to its former flora and fauna status. The group is committed to a planting programme of the reserve for the next six to seven years by which time the restoration should be complete. The group has planted and nurtured around 70,000 native plants since 2006 and received a grant of $7,600 to purchase eco-seeds, compost, and plant support materials for a native plant nursery.

Waikato Community Hospice Trust

The Waikato Community Hospice Trust’s vision of “Living Every Moment” moves the focus of care delivery away from dying. Instead, it empowers staff to look at innovative ways to support patients in their care, and their whānau and caregivers, enabling them to make the most of every moment. The trust received a grant of $2,774.00 to purchase a transportable community bed to deliver care at patients’ homes. The community bed will be utilised by the Community Nursing Team to deliver care to patients in their own home and to improve patient’s quality of life by creating a more comfortable environment for them.

Whāingaroa Environment Centre

Whāingaroa Environment Centre’s vision is for Whāingaroa to flourish with natural biodiversity and to build a community connected to the environment. The centre received a grant of $866 to run a series of monthly science nights between July 2022 and June 2023. The science nights are inspired by current environmental issues and reflect the organisation’s concern in line with international and national Sustainability Development Goals. At each event, a specialist in their field will talk about their knowledge and educate residents of Whāingaroa.

Wood Hatton Playcentre

Wood Hatton Playcentre is a bicultural organisation based on the philosophy of whānau tupu nga tahi, families growing together, and aims to empower adults and children to work, play, and learn together. The centre received a grant of $645.00 to purchase wet weather gear for bush sessions. The bush sessions allow for participants to embrace the strong spiritual bond with the land, papatuanuki, and preserve and pass on this bond with our tamariki as they grow. With winter approaching, wet weather gear will help children to stay warm and dry and ensure that the rain does not stop their play.
